Are Graphic Novels as good as Books?

Did you ever ask yourself, are graphic novels as good as books? I think they are! I believe you should try reading a graphic novel because they will get your attention, they will help you understand the content, and they will increase your vocabulary. I believe that graphic novels are as good as books.

To begin with, graphic novels easily capture your attention, and the attention of other readers as well. Just think that Children love the idea that they are reading a “Comic Book”. The pictures that the graphic novels include will grab the attention of the reader, and they will stay interested. I recently read one of my first graphic novels, and it captured my attention right away because the subject was great. The pictures were very beautiful, and I did not want to stop reading. The fonts have a big part in a graphic novel too. For example, when you open up a graphic novel there will be different fonts depending on a character’s attitude, or if they are screaming or softly speaking.

Secondly, graphic novels will help you picture what the story is about. I’ve heard that many children struggle to picture what a story is about, but when reading a graphic novel you can picture the story. The pictures help you do that, and the word bubbles do to. Along with the word bubbles they help by showing who is talking, and in a regular book it might not describe as well of who is talking. Many times I have tried to read books that seem so good, but they failed because I could not understand the meaning of the story. The graphic novel I read helped me to picture, or see how the story flowed.

Most of all, graphic novels will increase your vocabulary. In graphic novels vocabulary is a big part because they help a reader to understand the meaning of a word. The pictures help this, and by the fast learning of concepts it will give more time to learn other words as well. For a struggling reader there may be less words in a graphic novel to help them.

Some people might think that graphic novels are just comic books. You read it, and you’re done, some people say. They think, all it has is pictures, but that is not true. Graphic novels have great development in vocabulary, and if you are a struggling reader the graphic novel is the best genre to start you off. The pictures help a person to understand the content. The graphic novel is a great genre, and even though many may reject it you should try it.

Once again, graphic novels easily capture your attention, the pictures will help you to picture the story, and they will increase your vocabulary. If you don’t try reading a graphic novel you are missing out on a fun, new genre. Remember, if you are having trouble understanding a book try reading a graphic novel!
