Climate

The climate throughout Hawaii is Subtropical, meaning it rarely has extremes of heat or cold. In the summer and the winter, the climate is usually in the seventies, and low eighties. The highest temperature ever recorded was 100 degrees Fahrenheit, or thirty eight degrees Celsius. The lowest was twelve degrees Fahrenheit, or -11 degrees Celsius. Hawaii’s yearly rainfall is 110 inches.

The island of Hawaii is known as the big island and is the home of Mt. Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. In Hawaii, there are mountainous areas, cliffs, and waterfalls that will attract photographers. Though, the highest mountainous areas do not have cliffs or waterfalls. Hawaii does not just contain those things; it also consists of grassland where many cattle graze.

The island of Maui is found northwest of Hawaii, and close to Maui are three smaller islands called Moloka’i, Lana’i, and Kaho’olawe. Maui is the second largest of the islands. Located on Maui is Haleakala, a volcano that can be found in the southeastern part of Maui, and the northern part of Maui is a region of forests and mountains. Kaho’olawe is a small island that consists of no villages or towns. Moloka’i is a long island with tall cliffs in the north and very dry land in the west. Lana’i had once been called the Pineapple Island because most of the land was used for farming pineapples.

The island of O’ahu contains of two mountain ranges. These volcanic mountain ranges were what built up O’ahu. The Ko’olau Mountains form the northeastern part of O’ahu, and the Wai’anae Mountains form the southwestern part. In between these mountain ranges is a plateau. On the coast of O’ahu are some very beautiful beaches that can be compare to the other islands.

The islands of Kaua’i and Ni’ihau are two islands that live very close to each other. The mid area of Kaua’i is made up of swamps and deep, narrow valleys. The Na Pali Cliffs, on the northwest coast, are known to be magnificent. Waimea Canyon, located in the western part of Kaua’i, is often called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Ni’ihau is one of the smallest islands this day, yet it used to be a much bigger island.

The state of Hawaii is very mountainous. Volcanoes were the cause of the formation of all the islands and their mountains. That started when molten lava erupted from the ocean floor and then formed undersea mountains. These mountains soon grew to emerge from the water, creating islands. The highest elevation in Hawaii is Mauna Kea which is 13,796 feet above sea level. Mauna Kea lies in the big island, Hawaii.  Mauna Kea's location is in the mid northern area and is also one of the five volcanoes that made up the island.             Hawaii has one mountain range, called the Koolau Range, located in through the north to the southeastern coast on O’ahu. The range is visible to most people living on O’ahu. The majority of people living near Koolau Range do not climb it. The Koolau Range is often not climbed because the place is overgrown, and hard to climb.

The Pacific Ocean borders all of Hawaii, and is the largest body of water in the world. The Pacific Ocean covers over sixty six square miles covering over one third of Earth’s total surface area. The word Pacific also means peaceful. The Hawaiians surf in the ocean for fun, and they fish for seafood.

One special geographical feature in Hawaii is Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, and is located in the southwestern part of Kaua’i. Waimea Canyon is a deep gorge that has noticeable rock formations that remind some people of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
