Almost 50,000 deaths each year can be caused from smoking. I learned this fact as well as many others through the D.A.R.E program. This program taught me to abstain from smoking, alcohol and other dangerous substances. I learned facts about alcohol use, tobacco use, and ways to resist taking them through the D.A.R.E program. Therefore, it is important to know about these three subjects.

There are 75,000 alcohol related deaths every year in the United States. Alcohol will slow down the brain and body such as having a loss of coordination, poor judgement, memory loss, and slow reflexes. When alcohol enters the bloodstream it can damage every organ in your body. That will eventually lead to the heart being weakened which will reduce the amount of blood pumped to and from the heart. Finally, alcohol will slow down the entire body which will lead to coma and death.

Smoking is the leading preventable cause of deaths in the country. More than 400,000 Americans die from tobacco related causes every year. Chewing tobacco can cause mouth cancer, tooth loss, and other health problems. Smoking causes heart disease, lung cancer, bad breath, and will yellow your your teeth. Smokers may have many more colds and uperrespiratoy problems than nonusers.

There are five main strategies to help people to stay away from drugs. First, it is great to stay with nonusers especially where drug use is expected. Even better, if there are certain places where people use drugs just automatically stay away from them. Perhaps, someone asked you if you want to smoke, you can simply say, “No thank you,” and walk away. You could also give an excuse like, “No, I have to hurry home to do my homework!” Finally, you can choose to change the subject as in, “No thanks lets get ice cream instead!”

In conclusion, the D.A.R.E program teaches people to live healthy lives. By abstaining from smoking, alcohol, and finding resistance strategies you can live a happy and healthy life too. If you know that taking any kind of drug is harmful than make the right choice and stay away!

I pledge to live a healthy life where I stay away from smoking and alcohol. I will teach others not to abuse drugs and to always have positive minds. By doing this I will help others feel better. The D.A.R.E program helped me now it’s my time to help others to make the right choice.
